Mr. Gupta’s journey took a turn in 2022 when a bone marrow transplant proved unsuccessful, leaving him with limited time. However, a ray of hope emerged at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, where ‘Car-T cell therapy’ became his lifeline. Though the treatment comes with a price tag of Rs.42 lakhs in India, Mr. Gupta emphasizes that the cost abroad could soar to Rs. 3-4 crores.
But what exactly is ‘Car-T cell’ therapy?
In cases where cancer cells go unnoticed by the body’s white blood cells, ‘Car-T cell’ therapy steps in to revolutionize the approach. Beginning with the collection of the patient’s white blood cells, doctors genetically modify them and reintroduce them into the patient’s system through injection. The engineered CAR-T cells then identify and eradicate cancer cells, offering a breakthrough even in situations where traditional chemotherapy falls short, as stated by Dr. Rahul, CEO of ‘Immunoact.’
While the success stories are encouraging, the therapy awaits approval from CDSCO, with ongoing clinical trials across prominent institutions like PGIMER Hospital in Chandigarh. Notably effective in B-cell cancer cases so far, experts stress the need for extensive clinical trials to further understand its potential and address any lingering concerns.
