The new research was published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Studies have shown that sleep apnea causes changes in the brain. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder. In this breathing stops and starts repeatedly. If you snore and feel tired even after a full night’s rest, you may have sleep apnea. The brain’s white matter contains brain biomarkers. These indicate brain health. These biomarkers provide signals of cerebrovascular disease. Because there is currently no cure for these changes in the brain, the researchers said, there is a need to find ways to prevent them from happening.

The study included 140 participants with obstructive sleep apnea, with an average age of 73 years. The participants at the beginning of the study did not have problems with forgetfulness, concentration, or inability to learn new things before participating in this study. 34 percent of the participants had mild, 32 percent moderate, and 34 percent severe sleep apnea. The study looked at how long they were in deep sleep. Hyperintensities in the white matter of the brain were found to be greater in subjects with severe sleep apnea than in subjects with mild and moderate sleep apnea. Axonal integrity, which connects neurons in their brains, was also found to be reduced. White matter hypersensitivities are small lesions seen on brain scans.
